Rabbi Yonason Eybeschutz 1690-1764

רבי יונתן אייבשיץ ת"נ-תקכ"ד

עם ישראל חי לעולמי עד

Known for extraordinary compassion and great wisdom, Rabbi Eybeschutz was welcomed by government officials,
invited to debate ministers and bishops, and beloved by the communities he served and counseled. Besides being a
Kabbalist, he was a Talmudic and Halachic Scholar to the cities of Prague, Metz, Altona, Hamburg, and Wandsbek.
When the bishop of Metz issued a decree to expel the Jews, the bishop refused to be swayed. “The Jewish people will live on,
no matter what,” Reb Eybeschutz cried. The bishop, taken aback by his boldness challenged him to write down that
sentence, once for each Jew in Metz, of which there were, as it is told, 40,000 - in one hour’s time.
“With G-d’s help,” the Rabbi did so, and the decree was rescinded. This sentence not only turned the heart of the bishop
to offer a challenge, but also became a center of Jewish Mysticism.

עם ישראל חי לעולמי עד

From its middle, this sentence can be read in a repeated pattern in every direction to infinity.
